Event Details

Join us for the Networking for Financial Applications Workshop on 25th May 2011.  Hear from guest speaker Professor John Day from Boston University, one of the original ARPANET scientists and rapporteur of the well-known "Open Systems Interconnect" (OSI) reference model group will discuss the short-comings of the current Internet architecture and outline a new approach, relevant to the high performance and security demands of the financial services industry.

The workshop will also discuss the research undertaken by the EU ComiFin project,  which has created new mechanisms for sharing information between financial institutions and regulators to help protect "critical financial infrastructures".

This half day workshop is a FREE event,  and will be held in the Institute of Bankers, 1 North Wall Quay, Dublin. The event is oriented towards senior technologists and software engineers in the banking and payment processing industry but will have wider appeal for network engineers and scientists who wish to learn about mechanisms to improve the scalability and performance of internet applications.

Key Note Speakers

Key Note Speaker :  Prof. John Day  Bio

John Day has been involved in research and innovation of computer science and networks since the 1970s when they were the 12th node on 'Net. Mr. Day has developed and designed protocols for everything from the data link layer to the application layer. Also making fundamental contributions to research on distributed databases. He also did work on the early development of supercomputers and was a member of a development team on three operating systems. Mr. Day was an early advocate of the use of Formal Description Techniques (FDTs) for protocols and shepherded the development of the three international standard FDTs: Estelle, LOTOS, and extending SDL. Mr. Day was rapporteur of the OSI reference model working group and a major contributor to the upper-layer architecture; he also chaired the US ANSI committee for OSI Architecture and was a member of the Internet Research Task Force's Name Space Research Group.

He was a major contributor to the development of network management architecture, working in the area since 1984 and building and deploying a network management system, a decade ahead of comparable systems. Recently, Mr. Day has turned his attention to the fundamentals of network architectures and has published Patterns in Network Architecture (Prentice Hall, 2008), which has been characterized (embarrassingly) as "the most important book on network protocols in general and the Internet in particular ever written." Mr. Day is also a recognized scholar in the history of cartography, and has published on 17th Century China as well as contributing to exhibits at the Smithsonian.

He moved into the area of Distributed Computing and has worked in or around the disipline for the last 16 years, first with IONA Technologies, then as a specialist in financial software systems. He has implemented derivative and structured product toolkits at software houses like OpenLink International. Alan has implemented persistent, distributed, and mission critical financial systems in various financial houses across London. He was part of core development team at Virt-X Stock Exchange and later became part of the core Pricing Systems team at IGGroup (UK),  Alan acts as a consultant on mission critical proprietary financial systems for private clients, mainly focused in the area of statistical and index arbitrage. He is working with TSSG in creating a new research group focussed on Financial Information Systems. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, risk management and how to bring finance, telecoms and computing into a more cohesive world.
